What Does It Really Mean to Be a Leader? Lessons from My Defy Expectations Podcast Conversation

Leadership is not about having a title, giving orders, or expecting people to follow because of your position.

I know this because I have been on both sides of leadership.

Many years ago, early in my leadership journey, I said something I am not proud of:

“You do as I say because I am your boss and I tell you to do it.”

I said those words not once, but twice.

Looking back today, I can see that this was not true leadership. It was authority without connection. It was control without understanding. And it taught me one of the most important lessons of my career:

People do not perform at their best because they are told what to do. They perform because they feel trusted, respected, and inspired to contribute.

The Shift from Managing People to Leading People

Many leaders begin their journey believing that leadership is about making decisions, giving instructions, and ensuring tasks are completed.

While clarity and direction are important, great leadership requires something deeper.

Leadership is about communication.

The way you communicate influences:

  • How people feel about their work
  • How motivated they become
  • How much responsibility they take
  • How willing they are to share ideas
  • How strong the results become

A leader’s words can either create engagement or create distance.

The question every leader should ask is:

“What impact does my communication have on the people around me?”

Conscious Leadership Starts with Self-Awareness

During my conversation with Helen Honisett and Vicky Hampson on the Defy Expectations podcast, we explored conscious leadership and what it takes to create better workplaces.

One of the most important parts of becoming a better leader is being willing to look at yourself honestly.

Leadership development is not only about learning new strategies. It is also about recognizing old habits, assumptions, and behaviors that may no longer serve you or your team.

A leader who is unaware of their own communication style can unintentionally create:

  • Fear instead of trust
  • Silence instead of collaboration
  • Compliance instead of commitment

Self-awareness is where better leadership begins.

Communication Creates Motivation and Performance

Throughout my work with leaders and organizations, I have seen the same pattern repeatedly:

Better communication creates better relationships, and better relationships create better results.

When leaders communicate with clarity, empathy, and purpose, teams understand:

  • What needs to be achieved
  • Why it matters
  • How they can contribute
  • What success looks like

People want to know that their work has meaning.

They want to feel that their opinions matter.

They want leaders who listen, not just leaders who speak.

Ask Yourself: “What’s In It For Me?”

During the podcast conversation, I encourage listeners to reflect on one simple question:

“What’s in it for me?”

This question is not about selfishness. It is about understanding human motivation.

When communicating with your team, consider:

  • Why should they care about this goal?
  • How does this connect to their role?
  • What value does this create for them and others?

Great leaders do not only explain what needs to happen. They connect actions to purpose.

Leadership Is a Continuous Learning Journey

I have spent many years studying and working with communication, leadership, and human behavior. One thing I have learned is that leadership is never finished.

The best leaders continue to learn, reflect, and improve.

The leader I was 25 years ago is not the leader I am today. And that is exactly how it should be.

Growth requires humility.

It requires the courage to admit when we were wrong.

And it requires the willingness to change.
