Leadership is often associated with authority, decision-making, and achieving results.
But what if leadership is not about being above people?
What if it is about creating something meaningful that people want to be part of?
I recently had the pleasure of joining Dr. Lena Holmes on The Servant Leadership Mindset Podcast, where we explored the connection between leadership and communication.
During our 44-minute conversation, we discussed what servant leadership really means, how leaders can create stronger connections, and why communication is at the heart of successful leadership.
One question from our conversation continues to make me think:
Do leaders serve people, or do they serve a cause and invite people to join them on the journey toward that cause?
Rethinking Servant Leadership
The idea of servant leadership is often understood as leaders putting the needs of their people first.
This is an important part of leadership.
Great leaders care about their teams. They listen, support growth, and remove obstacles that prevent people from succeeding.
But I believe there is another perspective worth exploring.
Leadership is also about purpose.
A leader serves something bigger than themselves: a vision, a mission, or a meaningful cause.
The role of the leader is to connect people with that purpose and create an environment where they can contribute their strengths.
Leadership Is About Creating Meaning
People do not only want to complete tasks.
They want to understand why their work matters.
A strong leader helps people answer questions like:
- Why are we doing this?
- What impact are we creating?
- How does my contribution make a difference?
When people understand the purpose behind their work, they become more engaged and motivated.
Communication is what connects daily actions with a bigger vision.
The Role of Communication in Servant Leadership
You cannot practice servant leadership without effective communication.
Leadership happens through conversations.
It happens when leaders:
- Listen with genuine curiosity
- Provide clarity during uncertainty
- Give meaningful feedback
- Recognize people’s contributions
- Create space for different perspectives
A leader who communicates well creates trust.
And trust is the foundation of every strong relationship.
Serving People Through Better Conversations
Servant leadership is not about making everyone happy all the time.
Leadership still requires difficult decisions, honest feedback, and accountability.
The difference is the intention behind those actions.
A servant leader asks:
“How can this conversation help this person, this team, and this mission move forward?”
Even challenging conversations can become opportunities for growth when they are handled with respect and care.
Leaders Create the Environment Where People Thrive
A leader’s responsibility is not to have all the answers.
It is to create the conditions where people can succeed.
This means:
- Giving people trust and responsibility
- Encouraging learning
- Supporting personal development
- Creating psychological safety
- Helping people connect their work to purpose
When people feel trusted, they are more likely to take ownership.
Leadership Is an Invitation, Not Just an Instruction
One of the biggest differences between traditional leadership and modern leadership is the way people are engaged.
A command-based approach says:
“Follow me because I have the authority.”
A purpose-driven approach says:
“Here is the cause we believe in. Would you like to be part of creating it?”
The second approach creates commitment instead of simple compliance.
People become active participants rather than passive followers.
Final Thoughts
Leadership is ultimately about people, purpose, and communication.
Whether we call it servant leadership, conscious leadership, or simply good leadership, the foundation remains the same:
Create trust. Communicate clearly. Help people contribute to something meaningful.
The best leaders do not just tell people where to go.
They help people understand why the journey matters.
